He thought bluegrass was the most wonderful stuff he had ever heard and spent the next years with his nose buried deep in learning to play those songs lick for lick.Īcademically, Mike's creative side reached beyond the fretboard and won him an art scholarship to Meridian Junior College, where he studied for three years. Mike reckons he was working on a hay truck when he first heard the tunes of Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs. Mike's family lived in a farming community. Right around then his father built a Tandy Radio Kit giving Mike an opportunity to hear a variety of recorded music. But once he received a Sears & Roebuck "Tater Bug" mandolin for his 15th birthday, he spent most of his time noodling away on that.
He started out on trombone with a little piano thrown in. His mother, while not a musician herself, loved music and heartily encouraged Mike to explore it to his heart's content. “Compton's had lived in that area of the South for over 200 years.” He found that traditional music had been a mainstay in his family's households as far back as anyone could remember. “As a teenager, I got real interested in my lineage as my elders began to die out,” Mike said. However, his grandfather played guitar with a local fiddle hero which became the spark that would initially fire up Mike's lifelong appetite for acoustic music. His mother's grandfather played the violin but was gone before Mike ever had a chance to hear him play. Everyone on his father's side of the family had played music for generations. Those left to carry on Patricia’s legacy of love are her husband, Kenneth Hale children, Cindy (Mark) Compton, Tom (Mindy) Hale, Tim (Sandy) Hale, and Eddy (Angie) Hale 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren siblings, Helen Snyder, Nita (Mike) Kelley, Bill (Joyce) Robinson, Mike (Jane) Robinson, Roberta (Gilbert) Phelps, Dot (Mike) Chapel, Debbie (Bruce) Farrer and several nieces and nephews. Above all, Patricia valued every moment she spent with those she loved. In her spare time Patricia liked fishing, watching sports, following nascar, crocheting, gambling, and playing nickel & dime poker. She especially enjoyed visiting the state of Arizona, as well as Brown County, IN. Her Catholic faith was very important to her, and she was an example to others.

Patricia’s family and friends gained a lot of encouragement just by being around her because she was always so full of joy. Patricia was a very loving and caring woman. Patricia retired from General Motors in Kokomo in 1997 after many years of service. She married the love of her life, Kenneth Hale, on Jand they were blessed to share nearly 62 years of marriage. Patricia was a 1956 graduate of Tipton High School. She was born on August 16, 1937, in Tipton, to Harry and Lavella (Wheatley) Robinson. Patricia Ann (Robinson) Hale, 81, of Arcadia, passed away at her home on Tuesday, June 4, 2019.
